2nd: Oh sure, NOW I don't have my bike with me!
3rd: Wow, that's TOTALLY surprising to me. Standing on a cliff face during a lightning storm is not a good idea...who would have thunk it...

Driving along I-15 we elected to make an unplanned detour to something called Cedar Breaks National Park, and a ski resort called Bryan's Head. We only seem to ever visit ski resorts in the summer, and we've now been to almost all the big ones...Snowmass, Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Jackson Hole, Park City..but never yet one in the winter. So, we thought we'd add Bryan's Head to the list, and Cedar Breaks came along for the ride.

Well, weren't we TOTALLY surprised. Cedar Breaks was gorgeous; unpopulated, and a geologic paradise (it's basically the runoff coming off the rockies). We probably saw 3 people the whole half-day we were there driving and hiking around. The vistas were incredible, you could see scores if not hundreds of miles from the ridgeline, and the combination of red rock and erosion was magnificent.

Bryan's Head is a "high resort" that has some real potential, but it's probably a bit too far from population centers like SLC and LV to really become a mega-resort. Which, frankly is kind of nice. It has some very nice slopes, and they both allow and promote mountain biking. We watched the cyclists come down the hill at terrifying speeds for a while, then continued onward north. All in all, a very nice diversion, and we're glad we made it. Definitely on the "come back" list on of these days, preferably with a mountain bike and a stash of bandages and splints.
